In the begining

When I was a child long before women’s liberation, there were only a couple options for girls as respectable careers

Nurse, or teacher. Nurses got to wear romantic white with graceful head dresses and a cape. Teachers smelled of chalk. Nurses were heroic, and looked tragedy in the eyes. Teachers brushed eraser bits from their skirts. My mum was a nurse. I hated my teacher. No contest.

I never got to wear a cape.
